Root Study – Satellite

Description

In college one of my professors told me roots could not grow upwards. To grasp my head around the actual effect gravity had on roots, I decided to create a system to grow a plant upside down in a glass container to study its roots.

The plant I decided to grow creates a beautiful black flower. In line with the rest of my work at that time, thin piece literally reflects -the struggle, predisposition to failure, yet triumph against the odds- within the particularly Geechi community I observed growing up.

Ms. Julia Green was one of the biggest influences in my life. A matriarch of the African-American community of Charleston, SC. One of the first women to open her own business. Made the best beans and grew the best peppers I will ever eat.
